Language

The official language is Spanish but there are many distinct dialects. The Basques in the north, the Galicians of the northwest and the Catalans of the extreme northeast (Barcelona) all speak their own languages.

Value System

Spain scores high on the uncertainty avoidance index, which means that Spaniards prefer a more structured society with rules and regulations. They are family-oriented and known for their pride and personal sense of honor. Spain is overwhelmingly Catholic (97%) but has no official religion. Relationships are as important as expertise in obtaining work. Society is still differentiated by class and machismo is still strong.

Business climate

Spanish businesses tend to be very hierarchical. Teamwork often means that a team will follow and support a designated leader. It is usually not a give-and-take relationship among equals. Personal contacts are essential for business success. While you should be on time for all business appointments, Spaniards are not always punctual. Spaniards are highly aware of dress and style. Dinner and entertaining take place much later in the evening.
